Are YOU an Industrial Athlete?

Are you an industrial athlete? The answer is YES! Industrial athletes are people who work in manufacturing plants, light industrial facilities, and offices. As employees of Kennedy Space Center you are part of the industrial setting. Here at KSC your job and daily routines can be repetitive and vigorous leading to accidents and injuries. The physical nature of your job alone can make you more susceptible to musculoskeletal injuries.

Just like a basketball player, football player or, volleyball player you are expected to perform at an optimal level of performance. When an injury occurs, an athlete is rehabbed and treated quickly. They are expected to return to practices and games in a short amount of time. To be an industrial athlete is the same concept. When an injury occurs you are expected to return quickly and perform your job without hindrance. Occupational injuries are similar to those incurred by athletes and should be treated the same way as well.

Athletic training in the industrial setting is designed to return employees back to their pre-injury working status quickly, safely, with decreased sick/injury time, and with minimal time away from work. Athletic training applies the principles of sports medicine to the evaluation and treatment of injured workers.

There are many advantages of being an industrial athlete.

As an industrial athlete care can include: on-site physical rehabilitation, ice, heat, ultra sound, electrical stimulation, trigger point message, myofascial release, stretching, post-operative dressing changes, spinal stabilization, sport-specific/job-specific rehabilitation, instruction in ergonomic principles, injury prevention and education programs, return to work programs, and injury evaluations.

Be a proactive industrial athlete! Look for methods to prevent work-related musculoskeletal injuries. The most important thing you yourself can do is be educated.
